What Does This Blood Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: I recently got blood results from a Life screening test that indicated an abnormal low score of 58 eGFR on my kidney test with a normal 1.23 creatinine score. I am taking lisinopril 20-12.5 mg once a day for high blood pressure. I am also overweight significantly . ( I am 6' high at 250 lbs.) It indicates I have irreversible Chronic Kidney Disease. I see that a low eGFR is likely caused by lisinopril. Will stopping to take lisinopril raise my eGFR level and if so what would be the best replacement for lisinopril?

Brief Answer:
Yes, in the long run it may be beneficial to replace the medications !

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

As muscle mass decreases with age especially above 70 years, there is a change in eGFR values and normal levels for eGFR is also different by different labs. But as you have got the report and that says a significantly low values, it is a cause of concern and needs proper follow-up with your Physician. He may also refer you to a Urologist to rule out any other cause for low Glomerular filtration rate. Primary kidney diseases may also cause a decreased values.

Yes, Lisinopril have these side effects. Your treating Physician can review your antihypertensive medicine and after careful review of the cause for eGFR value being out of range, he may go for replacing the medicine. HCTZ is the one that has a safer kidney side effects profile.

(NOTE:- I recommend to consult your treating physician before any changes in any medications).

Hope I answered all of your queries. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you.
