Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: Recent blood test showed high Estradiol (63.3 pg/ml) and borderline PSA (3.9 pg/ml). I am age 75 with a family history of prostate cancer (father died of prostate cancer at 82 yrs). Are there steps I should take now? I am away from home and can't see my primary physician for a couple of months.

Brief Answer:
No need to get bothered by PSA levels of 3.9

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this disturbing results that you have reported. Your PSA is normal and at your age, am not the least concerned. Prostate cancer gives rise to higher numbers and even if you were to have cancer of the prostate at this age, there is no need to go aggressive as this is a slow progressing cancer especially in elders. Most elders with cancer of the prostate die from other causes not related to this and not from prostate cancer.

Be calm and relax. No need for an emergency trip to your physician at this time. All will be okay. Be relaxed and calm about it. Keep me posted if there are any other things of concern to you.

I was actually more concerned about the high Estradiol level of 63.3 pg/ml. I understand that a normal level would be less than 42.6 pg/ml, and that high levels sometimes indicate testicular cancer. Please comment.

Brief Answer:
This is not a marker of testicular cancer!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Estradiol is not routinely and commonly used for this purpose. This is really strange and should not cause any concern. Marker of testicular cancer is HCG and not estradiol. Maybe you ask your doctor specifically why this test was requested and loop back with me for more insights and guidance.

I wish you well and hope to hear from you!
