What Does This Chest X-ray Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Hello Doctor. I recently had a chest xray that resulted in the following statement: "Minimal atelectasis in the lingula." Can you please explain what this means and tell me whether this can become a potential problem for me by somehow spreading to other areas of the lung? What type of treatment might be necessary if it does become a problem. Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics and chest physiotherapy is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

Thanks for your question on HCM. I can understand your situation and problem.

Atelectasis means partial collapse of part of lobe or whole lobe.
The commonest cause for this is retained secretion due to infection. But can be due to small nodule or mass. Since you are having prostate cancer there can be a possibility of metastatic spread in the lung, which partially obstruct bronchus of lingular lobe and produce atelectasis.

So for the accurate diagnosis of this I advice you to consult pulmonologist and get done Bronchoscopy and XXXXXXX (Bronchoalveolar lavage) with biopsy if nodule or mass is seen.
And treatment depends entirely on diagnosis.

If infective etiology is there then antibiotics, mucolytics, expectorant and chest physiotherapy is needed.

And if malignant nodule is detected than chemotherapy is needed.
So better to consult pulmonologist and first diagnose the cause and start treatment accordingly.

Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
