What Does This Chest X-ray Indicate?
results from Xrays.
"the heart is not enlarged"
"there is a coarse appearance to the bronchovascular markings".
What does it mean exactly? and should I stop smoking now at the age of 66 would it correct itself?
It shows mild inflammation of small vessels and airways in lungs
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.
1. Your chest x ray shows that the lung markings are prominent. The heart is normal in size.
2. At your age, many people can have coarse bronchovascular markings. This happens due to thickening of the walls of small airways and vessels in the lungs probably from mild inflammation. This is not a serious condition and can be acceptable if you have been smoking for 40 years.
3. The finding is not specific to any condition. However if you stop smoking then there is slight chance of improvement though it will not correct itself totally. Concerns arise if you are having any respiratory problems. In that situation you should get lung function tests done and discuss with your doctor.
Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
