What Does This Colonoscopy Indicate?
Question: I am 53 yrs old and I had a Colonoscopy done 3 yrs ago .....
My results were
2 Polyps removed : Tubular Sessile Adenomas
1.) 3 mm ascending
2.) 7 mm in transverse
Both were Sessile Adenomas
the 7mm was what they called Sessile Serrated polyp
I understand that all polyps are pre-cancerous and they told me .....
They told meI had NO Cancer .... And it was a good report ....
My question is when should I go back for my next Colonoscopy ??
How many years ??

hi and welcome to hcm
Detailed Answer:
Considering that there was only 2 adenomas without dysplasia and smaller than 1cm which are both removed by colonoscopy, the risk of malignancy is minor and follow up algorithms recommend colonoscopy after 5 years unless some new symptoms or blood in stool occur. Such adenomas are common findings and you shouldnt be confirmed. Wish you good health. Regards

The risk of malignancy in these polyps is actually negligible. This is what i wanted to say.if this is resected at its base then nothing bad can happen from these polyps in future. 5 years is enough and you dont have to be worrried or stressed at all if rest of your colonoscopic finding was fine. Wish you good health. Regards

Everything I had in the colonoscopy was fine .... So my questions with what you read being my results ..... You believe 5 yrs .... is good for my next procedure .... I don't have to worry about anything happening to my colon ... because somebody was in there and they removed these polyps.....
Sorry for the question ..... I just want to make sure .... because once having one of these ... and something being in there and then the removal of polyps ..... didn't want anything to flat up now because of somebody in the colon .... being irritated ..... That it doesn't create cancer .... from that ???

I understand your concerns. sometimes these things are very confusing for people, but I ll try to explain it. Pollyps are actually fleshy growth of colon mucosa. in most cases polyp is made of normal tissue but there are cases where hystologic analysis can detect some changes in these polyps which are cancerous, precancerous or can lead to cancer in future. it is considered that colorectal carcinoma develops from such polyps which are cancerous. now, in your case there was tubular sessile adnoma which is not malignant and there was no dyspasia. adenoma means that it was benign, but in minority of cases it is considerd that such adenomas could in future(5,10,20 years) lead to carcinoma. but also,it may be stay as adenoma without malignancy for lifetime so probably nothing would happen even if this wasnt removed because really small number of sessile adenomas could lead to some cancerous lesions.
but since it was removed in your case ,there is no any possibility for this(for these polyps to become cancerous) because adenomas are on the top of polyps and it is cut at its base to ensure that evrything is out. so 5 year follow up is enough, colonioscopy after 5 years it is not there to detect changes of these 2 removed polpys, but it is used to find new polpys which could develop in these 5 years. polpys grow very slow so after 5 years, if present, it would be detected in early phase.
