What Does This Cytology Test Report Indicate?
Question: My mother-in-law age is 69. She have done thin prep cytology test. In microscopy indicate" FEW SQUAMOUS METAPLASTIC CELLS AND OCCASIONAL CLUSTERS OF ENDOCERVIAL CELLS IN THE MODERATE BACKROUND OF POLYMORPHS". Is there any problem, we have to anything.

The thin prep cytology report indicates an overgrowth of cells (that are normally present) within the cervical canal.
This (metaplasia) is associated with benign conditions (common) like infection or chronic irritation.
This alone is not a reason for undergoing hysterectomy (uterus removal)
It is possible that the cells may undergo further changes (dysplasia) which needs to be addressed with a possible risk of cancer.
I would advice to do a yearly pap smear to monitor for any dysplastic changes. I would not recommend surgery at present. If dysplasia or higher grade of cell changes occur, her uterus, ovaries and tubes may need to be removed.
If there was any sign of infection in the vagina, I recommend appropriate antibiotics. This would have been detected during a vaginal exam.
Her urine has a few pus cells. Please encourage her to drink more water (if not contraindicated due to other health problems).
The left renal cyst can be left alone if it is not symptomatic (pain, abdominal fullness, bloating, high blood pressure). If symptoms are present, it may need to be removed surgically (laparoscopically if possible).
