Question: I require a clarification on the use of Atorvostatin.Kindly give your valuable reply in your leisure time.

In the year 2006 , my tryglycerides were about 295.Then my attending Physician asked me to start taking 5 mg Atorvostatin. Since then i have been taking till the year 2014.Along with this i also used to take ASA 50 from the year 1980. In 2014 my doctor has asked me to take a combined drug Ecosprin AV 75 instead of taking them separately. i have type II diabetes from 2011 (NDDM).

My lipid profile and my wife 's is as under. She also taking the same Ecosprin AV 75 like me.She also has Diabetes Since 2005.
(NDDM)
MY LIPID PROFILE MY WIFE 'S LIPID PROFILE

Serum Cholestrol 123 s.Cholestrol 118
Tryglycerides 135 Tryglycerides 58
Hdl 41 Hdl 42
Ldl 57 Ldl 66
Vldl 25 Vldl 10

The blood sugar levels of both of us normal. We both take hypertensive drugs also.BP is normal for both of us.Now the main question i want to put forth to you is Whether we both can stop taking Atorvostatin combined Ecosprin AV 75 and take pure ecosprin 75..Can we stop taking Atorvostatin since the lipids are normal in our both cases

Brief Answer:
Yes , you should continue atorvastatin

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
I am Dr. Mody and I will be addressing your concern .
I will be objective I'm my recommendation.
This is Based on 2015 XXXXXXX college of cardiology / XXXXXXX diabetes association recommendation .
Now as both of you are diabetic it is recommended that you should continue statin therapy .
We have to calculate ASCVD score which gives 10 year probability of you having a heart event . ( it is available online and you can get it yourself)
Now considering the limited info.
For you high dose statin is recommended , that is 80 mg atorvastatin
For your wife moderate to high dose statin ( high dose according to ACC) that is 40 - 80 mg atorvastatin is recommended.
Both the above are irrespective of lipid profile results .
However I wish to tell you that the lipids in your case may be because of taking atorvastatin and stopping the same may push it to higher limits .
Lastly statin are not only to decrease lipids but to give overall protection from heart attack and stroke .
So continue the same if you believe in scientific data .

Brief Answer:
ASCVD is ascoring system for future heart issues, stroke based on risk fa

Detailed Answer:
ASCVD is atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk .
Now when you type as ASCVD risk calculator on google you will get the thing. just fill in the details and it calculates the risk and suggests the dose of statin .
It's official XXXXXXX college of cardiology website.
tools.acc.org › ASCVD-Risk-Estimator
also application for android and I phone is available.

So what's ASCVD . It's a scoring system which calculates your risk for cardiovascular events like heart attack , stroke , kidney issues , peripheral vascular disease based on your risk factors and calculates 10 year risk and life long risk .
So if you are are higher risk it's better to take atorvastatin since you have been taking for a long time .
Your most important risk for me is having diabetes, for which statin is justified.
Lastly it's because you are taking the medication the lipids are in control . Stopping will push it up withen 3 months .

All this as i wanted to give you scientific basis for my opinion.
Let me know if anything needed in future .
Do rate the conversation for others reference
