Question: Respected Doctor,

My wife is 38W3d pregnant and yesterday(12/07) she gone through ultrasound scanning(in doctor office) and after completion of the same, doctor said baby's head circumference(HC) is low and BPD is also low and suggested for ultrasound scanning again for next week in hospital. We are really worried about this and scared. Our doctor says no need to worried. But we are literally worried and our doctor is not giving not clear picture of the issue. We are worried about Microcephaly or mental retardness. Please help us to know the real fact and suggestion. I have attached the ultrasound scanning report(done yesterday)

Brief Answer:
Not worrisome at full term.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
I have seen the attached report. If in all her previous reports HC or BPD were corresponding with the fetal age then there is no need to worry. At full term, this can happen due to mild head compression caused by the engagement of the head before delivery. This is not suggestive of microcephaly or a mental retardation. There is no need to worry. Do wait for the pains to start and let the baby come out. After delivery, proper evaluation can be done.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Wait for next scan.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I have seen all the attached reports. The ultrasound scan at 20 weeks shows a normal BPD and HC. But after 20 weeks a gap of 18 weeks for next ultrasound is too long. Please attach report of ultrasound at 28-32 weeks for a better evaluation. If HC at 30-32 weeks was normal then a growth retardation at 38 weeks is less likely. With the provided reports we cannot safely say that the baby is growing well. It is best to wait for the next scan and see if the BPD and HC show a proper growth.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
Regards.
