What Does This Ultrasound Report Indicate?

Question: Hello Doctor,
my 5 month old son's ultrasound reports says that there is mild increased echogenicity of kidneys.
How serious is this?
what further action need to be taken from our end?
will this affect him in future?
I have attached his ultrasound reports for reference.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I understand your concern. Increased renal echogenicity is very very non specific ultrasonographic finding, especially in children.

This does not mean that the kid has a serious renal disorder. Let me know if your child has any symptoms.We should have a proper clinical examination along with history taking and kidney related blood test - renal function test. We should consider all these in interpreting the ultrasound report. A single ultrasound report like this is very nonspecific, do not worry about it.

Increased echogenicity on ultrasound makes a clinician suspect a kidney disease as such changes are seen in various diseases involving kidneys.

Increased echogenicity of renal parenchyma in children with acute illness is a transient feature and does not necessarily indicate renal disease. Some generalizations could be made although increased echogenicity is often nonspecific.
