Question: My father is 56 years old and he has kidney stone, recent scanning readings say
Right renal mid calyceal calculus measuring 4mm un size and left renal mid and lower calyceal calculi measuring 7- 8 mm
My questions are
1. Which operation would be safe either laser shooting or shock waves ( 3 or 4 sittings )
2. How severe is this kidney stone problem according to these readings
Please suggest me safer Way of kidney stone removal with less operations

Brief Answer:
You can go for ESWL for Left sided stones .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your father has been detected to have stone of a size of 4 mm in Rt kidney and two stones of a size of 7 and 8 mm in left kidney .

Normally one can expect the stone of a size of less than 8 mm to pass out throgh normal urinary passage spontaneously .

A stone of a size of 4mm on Rt XXXXXXX and 7 mm on left side can be expected to pass out with following regime .
1) Drink more water to produce more urine so that stones can get flushed out with urine .
2) Take Tab Tomsulosin once daily and Drataverine twice daily .These drugs are smooth muscle relaxants and help to dilate the ureter and there by help to to pass the stone down into bladder without pain .
3) Antibiotic like Norfloxacin twice daily to prevent infection .

In majority of cases stone pass down within a period of 2-3 weeks .
.
Repeat ultrasound scanning after three weeks to see the status and positions of stone and to confirm whether they have passed out or not .
.
As far as stone of a size of 8 mm on left side the best non invasive option is to get the stone fragmented by a procedure called Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy(ESWL) .This is carried out as out patient procedure and does not require either hospitalization or anesthesia. ..

I am sure your father should do well with this modality and does not require any surgical intervention .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

What are the disadvantages of ESWL compared to laser surgery as my father already has hypertension and diabetes
Previously he had laser surgeries for kidney stone removals done
Which is better and safe ESWL or laser surgery
Does ESWL damage any other body parts or any tissues or muscles and how severe is it

Detailed Answer:
hello
Thanks for follow up.

There are no disadvantage of ESWL over laser surgery .

Basically laser surgery is done for stones impacted in ureter and causing back pressure changes in kidney where as ESWL is done for stones located in kidney .

Laser surgery is a invasive procedure requires hospitalization ,anesthesia and expertise and there is risk involved even in beat hands. It is expensive compared to ESWL.

ESWL does not damage any other organ, muscle or tissue in vicinity of kidney .

Thanks and Regards.
