Brief Answer:
Kidney damage makes blood pressure go up and vice versa.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask a Doctor service.

Initially it is the high blood pressure of very long duration that will eventually cause kidney damage.

And in turn, kidney damage will make blood pressure to rise.

Your doctor is trying to see how much of damage has high blood pressure might have caused to your kidneys, that is why the doctor has asked for blood tests to check kidney function.

Kidneys are very integral to blood pressure regulation by increasing or decreasing the amount of water in the blood by regulating the bloods' osmolarity through sodium and potassium absorption.

And also by releasing renin which converts angiotensin which directly acts on the smooth muscle cells in the blood vessels thereby constricting the blood vessels and thus causing high blood pressure.

I hope you understand the mechanism a little bit better now.

Hope your tests turn out to be just fine.

Best regards
