Barrett's disease or more commonly Barrett's esophagus is a disease affecting the lower part of esophagus (food pipe). The lower end of esophagus is lined by squamous epithelial cells. Due to reflux of acid from the stomach into the esophagus, the lining of the esophagus is inflamed. The inflamed esophagus becomes red in color and the squamous lining is replaced by columnar epithelium of the stomach. The importance of this change in the epithelium lies in the fact that the columnar lining is more prone to develop cancer.
