Brief Answer:
Please see details for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD)

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. CJD is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease also termed as human prion disease. It is a rapidly progressive degenerative brain disorder that leads to dementia (you forget things) and ultimately death. Disease is marked by rapid mental deterioration, usually within a few months. Initial signs and symptoms typically include:

Personality changes
Anxiety
Depression
Memory loss
Blurred vision or blindness
Insomnia
Sudden, jerky movements

- The cause of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease appears to be abnormal versions of a kind of protein called a prion. Normally these proteins are harmless. But when they're altered, they become infectious and can harm normal biological processes.

- Risk factors include:
Age : Usually around 60
Genetic: Positive family history

- Diagnosis of CJD can only be made by a brain biopsy or an examination of brain tissue after death (autopsy). Treating doctors often can make an accurate diagnosis based on medical and personal history, a neurological exam, and certain diagnostic tests.

- No effective treatment exists for CJD. Doctors usually treat symptoms to make patient as comfortable as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

The gentleman mentioned had a father who worked as a butcher. Altho the father did not have the disease, could the gentleman mentioned have inherited the propensity for it? A woman-friend had Creutzfeld-Jakob disease several years ago and recovered -- how can that be? Isn't it always fatal? How is Mad Cow Disease like and different from CJD? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
CJD is variant of mad cow disease.

Detailed Answer:
hello

Thank you for the followup query. Yes there is a possibility that its was inherited by that gentleman.

Yes it almost always is fatal but as condition is rare so limited data is available. This can only be explained if one talks to the treating physician of that women with CJD.

Mad cow disease occurs in animals while its variant CJD affects humans as mentioned earlier.

Thank You
