TNM classification for cancers/tumors explained
Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.
Thank you for writing to us.
I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help.
There exists an international classification of all cancers called the TNM classification. It comprises of the following:
-'T': 'T' describes the size of the tumor and whether adjacent organs are involved or not. It has different grades:
+ 0: No tumor
+ 1: small size (in centimeters)
+ 2: Larger (in centimeters)
+ 3: Largest (in centimeters)
-'N': 'N' indicates lymph nodes. Whether the tumor cells have spread to the lymph nodes or not. It also have the numbers:
+ 0: Meaning no spread to lymph nodes
+ 1: Spread or involvement of one lymph node (usually the closest one from the site of tumor)
+ 2: Involvement of more than one set of lymph nodes
+ 3: Distant or numerous lymph nodes are involved
-'M': 'M' stands for metastasis which means spread. In this, the tumor spreads from one site to another. (Eg. From the duodenum to the pancreas). It also has two grades:
+ 0: No metastasis
+ 1: Metastasis is seen
Based on an elaborate evaluation of the current tumor, and its surrounding structures, the TNM classification is done ma'am.
I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.
Best wishes.
