What Is Terazosin Dosage For Treatment Of High BP?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 May 2014
Question: i have been taking benazepril-hctz 20/12.5 for quite some time, but my BP hasn't gone down quite as much as he would like to see [130/140 over 85/95]. So at my last physical he added Terazosin 10 mg. Shouldn't I work up to that dosage gradually. I took my first dose with out being informed @ it's BP lowering effect and I darn near fainted away while I was driving. I was able to pull off the road and gather myself thank god. But I thought I was about to die White shining light and all. But shouldn't I be started on a smaller dose, or tried benazepril-hctz 20/25?

Brief Answer:
Terazosin should be taken 1mg in the first dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
I am Dr.Rovena
I had gone through your query, medical history and understand your concern.

Terazosin is an alpha-1-selective adrenoceptor blocking agent.
The recommended starting dose for treating BPH is 1 mg daily. The dose should be increased in a stepwise fashion up to 10 mg daily.

Postural hypotension and fainting usually are associated with the first dose or the first few days of treatment.
The dose you took of 10 mg was vary high for the first dose and caused you hypotension.
Your doctor should have adviced you not to take more than 1mg the first day and to instruct to take it at bedtime.
Also the doctor should advice you not to drive or to do hazards tasks during some days after you took the first dose.

Combining medications in lower doses often can reduce blood pressure more effectively with fewer side effects. That's why is better to add one drug from another class of antihypertensive drugs than increasing the dose of a drug because the side effects increase with dose.So I don't recommend taking benazepril-hctz 20/25.

I suggest to consult your doctor again and express him all your concerns about the new drug and how you should use it.

I suggest to do some lifestyle changes in order to control your blood pressure:

1)Dietary changes can help control blood pressure. One diet designed to promote lower blood pressure is known as the DASH diet.
The DASH diet recommends eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry, nuts, and fish. Red meat, saturated fats, and sweets should be avoided. It can also help to reduce your intake of sodium.

2)Do exercise at least 40 min a day.

Hope I was able to help.If you have further questions I will be happy to help.
Take care.
