What Is A HIDA Scan Help With The Pain In My Upper Right Quadrant?

The test is not done to treat the pain rather to know the cause of pain
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
In fact HIDA scan is not done for the treatment of pain relief. Rather the test is done to diagnose reasons as why you have the pain (hence can be treated then) and weight loss. This test is done to know the problems in liver, gall bladder, and hepatobiliary channels. All these organs are located in our right upper abdomen and any problem here can cause pain here besides other problems.
The problems may be like stones, or inflammation, or blockage, or stricture in the above organs.
The test in fact is done by injecting a special dye in your vein which would go to liver and then through the gall bladder and through all the channels there to the small intestine .This special dye is traced continuously with a special camera on computer to see if every thing is normal. Problems anywhere in this whole System (liver, gall bladder, beliary channels) would be picked by this test.
The test may take about an hour .You may go home the next day after the test. Sometimes picture may be taken after 24 hour if needed.
Hopes it's clear now. Let me know if you have any question to ask, I would be glad to answer any further question about this.
Regards,
Dr. Rahman

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
No, this test is not done as the outpatient basis. Generally, a patient needs to be admitted for 24 hours.
Unfortunately, it does not give us a lot of information about NAFLD. This test, in fact, sees the track starting from Gallbladder to liver through small channels to the intestine. It tells us if there is any pathology blockage in this channels which are in the liver as well.
So the test is used for problems in the gallbladder, bile ducts, biliary channels and the small channel in the liver as well.
However, the test does not tell a lot about the liver itself. As NAFLD is not the disease of the channels going through the liver, so this test doesn't tell a lot about that.
To diagnosis NAFLD we do ultrasonic and the severity is confirmed by biopsy of the liver. NAFLD may lead to cirrhosis. However, most people won't get cirrhosis.
Unfortunately nothing other then weight loss (more vegetables and fruits, fewer carbohydrates) has shown any proven benefits for NAFLD. Weight loss may be the best treatment.
There are claims about the benefit of some drugs like Glucophage and pioglitazone and the antioxidants like vitamin E. and many physicians prescribe them however they all need more proofs.
Hopes it's clear now. Please don't hesitate if you have any further question to ask.
