What Is Elevated SED Rate Indicative Of?

Question: Hello,

I had my recent bloodwork which shows my SED rate is 41. I had this SED rate earlier during Oct 2017 as 41 which got reduced to normal range under due to the medicine prescribed by my doctor which is Prednisone. Now it is again 41. I did ask my Rheumatologist who has checked from Rheumatological point of view on 2017 and found everything normal. She also checked for Lupus which was also negative.

But all of a sudden this SED rate came up, what does this mean, I am scared likre anything else. In google it says its either the C word or Rheumatoid Arthritis. I do have pain in my entire right side along with heaviness in hip and abdomen area. I am told to do MRI with contrast for my abdomen, and Hip with EMG on right leg. I do have issue with Pelvic area so was asked to do MRI on PELVIC area.

Can you please advise on this as I am scared with this SED rate.

Regards

Brief Answer:
SED rate only signals an ongoing inflammatory reaction!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

If it were cancer, there is no way that would have reduced with prednisolone alone as you received no cancer targeted treatment. That is enough to totally disregard cancer as a possible option here.

SED rate above normal raises concerns about inflammation any where in the body. With your pain symptoms, there is certainly an inflammatory reaction going on somewhere. While the cause has not be identified, it is certainly not cancer. Further evaluation as requested might show us where this is coming from.

Sit back and have a cool head and mindset. I wish you well and keep me updated about this.

Hello,

Please advise me to the right direction as this pain on the right side and heaviness is killing me. I cant do any daily life activities, I cant enjoy a normal life. Will there be any side effects of Gadolium as I am told to do MRI multiple times. I was also told that my Kidney is functioning right.

Doctor, is there any way to know what is causing this inflammation and how to get rid of this so it does not show up again. Can you please advise on my last post as well.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Gadolium is very safe!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Gadolium is safe. Million of people do this test weekly and less than a few ever have anything to worry about. You would be just fine.

As the tests go on, we would be able to. Endeavor to share the findings of this test with me for further review and guidance. However, isolated SED rate alone in not something to have nightmare about unless there are severe symptoms associated with this.

I wish you well.
