What Is Hernia?
When organ/s are found at a place where they SHOULD NOT have been
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, very short and specific.
I will try my best to make this as simple as you question is.
Hernia:
In simple words, whenever any organ of the body is found out of its normal place into a place where it should NOT have been is called hernia.
The commonest example in human is an Inguinal Hernia: in this hernia the abdominal contents like intestine and omentum travel through a gap in the abdominal wall from the inguinal region to the groin and down under the skin.
Other examples of hernia which you might have heard so many times are:
- Herniated disc in the spine
- Herniated muscles
- Hiatus Hernia
- Incisional hernia, which develops after any operation / Surgery.
and so on.
Hernia occurs due to:
A gap in the confinements of that particular organ; again for example in Inguinal Hernia there is a gap in the abdominal wall. There is a weakness in the wall which gets weaker day-by-day due to increased intra-abdominal pressure due to daily activities, straining, coughing and a time comes when the lining of the abdomen called peritoneum (called a sac) starts to glide down and allows the contents of the abdomen to leave its boundaries and enter into a place where it should not have been.
The gap is called the neck
The outermost part is called a fundus.
In between the two (neck and fundus) is called body.
During surgery : we dissect the sac, return the contents to its place and tie at the neck, reinforce the muscles and tendons in such a way that the recurrence is not allowed by giving strength to the weak part.
I hope this answer helps you to understand Hernia.

May I also know why would you be asking this specific question, I mean does anyone in the family have this?
