Brief Answer:
Its due to Overweight or Genetic.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greeting from Dr. Divakara.P
First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

Insulin resistance means the body will not react to the Insulin in the optimum way.

For example if 5 units of Insulin used to bring the blood sugars to normal levels in a normal person , it would take 10 units or more to bring the blood sugars to normal levels .

Most of the time Insulin resistance occurs due to Overweight or Obesity. In that case reducing the weight will reduce Insulin resistance.

There are certain genetic conditions also that can cause Insulin resistance . In that case nothing can be done .

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

Thanks for the prompt response and a detailed one doctor. So, if my parents or grand parents have diabetic problem it is most likely genetic, I hope. So in that case what are the options? Is there absolutely nothing that can be done about it?
Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Get tested first.

Detailed Answer:
HI XXXXXXX

Just relax . Just because your parents and grand parents are diabetic doesn't mean you will get Diabetes . But yes the risk of you becoming diabetic is more than that of a common person.

Your options are to get tested for Diabetes by doing FBS, PPBS , HBA1c and if it is normal get GTT test also done . If these are normal then nothing to worry but keep doing these test every 3-4 years.

Do daily aerobic exercise like Brisk walking or jogging or running or cycling at least 20-30 minutes per day.

Hope this answers your query.

Any clarification feel free to ask .
