What Is The Cause Of An Excessive Crying For No Reason In An Infant?
She was having problem with breast feeding and still she does not take breast long enough. I am expressing milk by breast pump and give her by bottles. So far I did not have to give her formula milk.
First two weeks she was bit quiet and was not making much fuss. But from last week I noticed she is fussy. She wants her feed as soon as possible when hungry otherwise she will cry a lot. She will take one breast only for 5 minutes and then cry. I then give her bottle with my expressed milk and she takes it easily until finish. She also cries when we put her down on bed or cot. She sometimes stop crying when we hold her in our arms and make swing like motions. She cries when we need to change her nappy.
What I am trying to say is she is crying a lot compared to two weeks ago. Sometime she cries for no reason even after just taking a feed.
Overall her feeding, peeing and pooing seems normal. She has regular hiccups as well. She does not have fever. Her weight has gained acceptable.
1> What this crying could be related to?
2> We read on internet that sometimes it is Reflux. Is this crying could be related to reflux? She has vomited once so far. She has regular hiccups, few coughs and fussiness. She does not like to lie down when awake.
3> We are trying to burp her after every feed. sometimes she burps, sometimes not.
4> Normally her poos are yellowish but yesterday and today she had bit greenish coloured poo. What this could be??
5> Do you think we need specialist attention?
Please reply ASAP.
Thanks
Your baby's alright - don't worry.
Detailed Answer:
Hi!
I understand your concern.
Coming to your queries one by one.
1. A baby of this age can cry for mother's milk, mother's touch, voice, smell and sight. Everytime hunger is not the reason and feeding is not the reason.
2. If her weight gain is normal, you need not think about GERD OR gastroesophageal reflux. Even if there is mild GERD, it doesn't require treatment if the baby's weight gain is good and there is no incessant vomiting.
3. I don't think anything serious requiring medical attention is going on in your baby.
4. Greenish colored poo is not a problem as long as she's voiding normally and gaining weight well.

On advise of chemist friend I have given my baby drops of InfaCol (medicine name for Colic and to relieve wind, pain) and it seems to have effect.
My baby has started taking more feed now. I think this was the part of problem as we were giving her limited amount of milk in the bottle. Now we have started to give her more until she feels full.
Overall right now baby is better compared to last week.
Another Issue:
We had given bath to our baby two days ago with some baby shampoo and baby wash liquid. Yesterday we noticed she had some red rashes and spots on her face and back of ears. She did not cry or she did not have fever. People say it may be temporary allergy which will resolve in few days.
1> Do you think we should apply any lotion or something to heal the red rashes?
2> Yesterday whole day she was NOT very active. She slept six hours in afternoon. We had to try hard to wake her up to feed as she did not wake up herself. We were scared but at night she was active again. Why suddenly she behaved very very quiet?? She is one month today.
Thanks.
This may be mild Eczema, no need to use any lotion.
Detailed Answer:
Hi...
I am happy that the baby is better now. But usually I do not advise any medicines for colic because it will temporarily stop the intestinal moments and increase bacterial growth which is not good on the long run.
By what you say I feel that this is only a mild Eczema and it does not require any lotion. If the rash is increasing in area then you take an image and get back to me. As of now I do not think you need to use any lotion or cream for it.
Baby being quite like that is called quite wakeful state and it is physiological in newborn babies. If the baby is otherwise active and feeding well you need not worry about this at all.
The most important alarming sign for babies of this age is stopping of feeding. If the baby is feeling well you need not worry at all.

Please see attached photos about rashes. My baby's forehead has become very dry and some white flakes are coming. She is not making any fuss or crying. She does not have fever as well.
Chemist here has given one lotion to apply if baby scratches the area and crying. We want to avoid applying any lotions if you think her rashes and dry skin is not to worry.
Please let me know how long it will take to become her skin normal again with this rashes and dryness. When we should think about applying the lotion?
Regards.
This is Eczema.
Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Thank you for uploading the photos.
What we are dealing with here is Eczema and I am sorry to say that, this does not look like very mild to me from the images.
She will definitely require her skin to be kept moisturized to prevent the spread.
The trick of the management is keeping the skin moist and never allowing it to be dry.
For this oil massage and lotions like Atogla will help. I also suggest you to use the mildest soap possible and also the mildest shampoo which is available in your country.
Here in India I usually prescribe Tedybar soap and Spoo shampoo for this along with Atogla lotion.
Eczema is a sort of allergy and allergies can be controlled. But usually kids grow out of it that is as the age progresses, they become better starting from 6 months.
