What Is The Clear Liquid That Comes From A Wound?
Question: I have several cat scratches on my lower calf to my inner ankle. They were cleaned with antiseptic and stopped bleeding almost immediately. However, they have been weeping clear fluid for over 24 hours. The area is not red or swollen. What is causing the liquid?

Information
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
Wounds can weep a serous fluid in the first 46-72 hours. It is a thin, watery, straw colored fluid. In small amounts it is normal. It is called a transudate and is produced by fluid being pushed through capillary walls. Increased capillary pressure causes more to come out, so elevating your leg is a very good idea. Watch the wounds closely to make sure it doesn't get red, hot and tender, which would be signs of bacterial infection. Also watch for signs of purulent discharge (pus).
I hope this information helps.
