What Is The Difference Between HSV-1 And HSV-2?

Question: I acquire HSV 1 genitally in 1984. I've had maybe two outbreaks after the initial one, the last of which was over 15 years ago. I've always been forthcoming with partners. My current boyfriend and I have been together for over 7 months. This is a major sticking point in our relationship. I haven't been able to explain to him the transmission differences between genital HSV I and HSV II. He also gets oral cold sores. Maybe you can help me clarify this for him.

Hello XXXX,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
HSV 1 is transmitted through oral secretions or sores on the skin, can be spread through kissing or sharing objects such as toothbrushes or eating utensils. Additionally, it is possible to get genital herpes from HSV-1 if the individual has had cold sores and performed sexual activities during that time.HSV-2 is mostly contracted through forms of sexual contact with a person who has HSV-2.
