What Is The Difference Between A Venous Ultrasound Of The Legs And A Duplex Ultrasound?
I need to know the difference between a venous ultrasound of the legs and a duplex ultrasound, or are they the same test. I would assume a vascular surgeon would be the correct person to ask this.
Yes,both are same tests.

Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to HCM
Yes,both are same tests.
Duplex ultrasound comprises two elements: 1.Grayscale Ultrasound 2.Color-doppler Ultrasound.
Duplex ultrasound are used to assess both arterial and venous system of the body.
During duplex ultrasound, firstly grayscale ultrasound is done.It is used to visualize the basic structure of the body part. No motion or blood flow is assessed.
Then colour doppler is used to assess blood within an artery or vein.We can assess velocity of blood flow, any resistance etc.
Where as Venous ultrasound of the legs is used to asses venous system of the legs only.It uses same duplex ultrasound technique.First grayscale imaging is done then colour doppler is used to assess venous system.
So,we can use both terminology.
Ultrasound and duplex ultrasound are radiological tests performed by trained radiologist.

Hello XXXXXX
Thanks for writing back
Yes,Doppler findings are assessed by a radiologist.
During duplex ultrasound, both grayscale Ultrasound and colour-doppler techniques are used simultaneously.Only few buttons are needed to change the imaging.
During assessment of veins,we can assess valve status.Due to valve damage, there is regurgitation of blood which can be easily picked by colour doppler. So,we can judge that valves are competent or not.
