What Is The Dosage Of Hydromorphone?
Question: Hi, I had foot surgery three days ago. Three weeks ago I was hospitalized since they had to remove a duct stone from the pancreas which caused pancreatitis. I was administered, 4 mg thru the IV for 5 days. Days later (totally different), I had foot surgery, & they administered it by tablets. I was taking it, 4 mg, 2 every 4 hours. I would cut them in half cause I figured it might be too mch. Is this the correct way?? Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the information.
Hydromorphone is an opioid analgesic. As it has a very short half life,it has to be taken every 3-4 hours.
Regarding dose,it is usually started 2-4 mg every 4 hours.Depending on the response,it is titrated up or down.Usual adult maintenance dose is 4-8 mg every 4 hours.
In short, the dose you are given is not too high.Anyhow,if you are having adequate analgesia, you can try reducing to half the present dose.
Do consult your treating doctor for better formulation of the dosage as he will be able to examine you.
Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
