What Is The Interpretation Of The Vomiting Blood In Any Stage Of AML ?

Question: Hi Doctor, asking on behalf of a family friend, what is the third stage of AML and what is the life expectancy. Also, is vomiting blood during chemotherapy considered dangerous. What is the interpretation of the vomiting blood in any stage of AML and the risk to life in terms of the same ? Can you please make me aware
Brief Answer:
blood vomiting due to low platelets
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
There is no 3rd stage for AML as there is no staging system. Probably it is the type you are talking about, AML -M3. It is an aggressive disease but fortunately with treatment 60% can get cured. So if your friend can get cured, he/she will have normal life expectancy.
Blood vomiting is probably due to low platelets and it can be controlled with platelet transfusion. it does not carry any special significance.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Doctor for explaining so clearly for me to understand. I just have one follow up question. How important is diet for a person undergoing chemo. Right now there is nobody near to attend to him as the hospital insisted on no contact to minimize risk of injection. He is not able to have food due to the vomiting and what are the alternatives that we can suggest the hospital to provide. Please recommend.
Brief Answer:
Hospital will take care of the nutrition
Detailed Answer:
Diet is very much important. We should try to restart oral feeding as soon as vomiting is controlled. Oral supplements like ensure, etc can be tried.
If still it fails then intravenous nutrition for few days can be done.
