Unfortunately cancer of the pancreas is one of the worse cancers which a poor prognosis but this have been slightly improved in the last 10 years or so which innovations in treatment.
The relative one year survival for patients with pancreatic cancer is 28% (28 out of every 100 persons with this type of cancer will be alive after a year).
In the majority survival is 4 to 6 months.
There are rare instances , if the cancer areas can be successfully removed, that a person may survive for 12 to 19 months. The five year survival rate here is 15 to 20 % (in persons where the cancer is removed, 15 to 20 persons out of 100 are alive after 5 years)
It is not likely that your father in law would be candidate for removal with a history of mets, renal failure, COPD and pneumonia however
