What Is The Life Expectancy Of A Person With Polycystic Kidney Disease?
My father suffered with policysystic kidney disease. I have gone for ultra sound test and all blood tests and creatinine levels are 0.9 and dctr said ni cysts so far. My age is 33. What is the chance to detect the disease in future and what is the life expectancy once it is diagnosed? Also please let me know what is the genetic test to check the DNA for this disease and how much it costs?
Genetic testing available but costly.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
If polycystic kidney disease is to occur, it usually occurs by your age. However, for confirmation you can get a genetic test done.
For a genetic test, the geneticist takes a blood or saliva sample and analyzes the DNA for gene mutations that cause autosomal dominant PKD, called PKD1 and PKD2, or autosomal recessive PKD, called PKHD1. Personnel in specialized labs generally perform all genetic testing.
The price of these tests is quite high (Rs.45,000 or more).

Thank u very much for the response.
My cousin got diagnosed the same disease in 2003 when he was 30 and that too not with any symptoms but in an accidental ultra scan. After 12 years in 2015 his condition gone critical and he is going for dialisys. In these 12 years he didn't take any regular medicine or strict diet but he was healthy till last year Oct.How to understand the nature of the disease. And USG is enough or do I need to go for MRI or CT scan? If the disease is less effective if it occurs on or after 40?
You need not panic
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.
It is apparent that the genes are running in your family. Prior medication would not be quite helpful in this disease and as the kidney function deteriorates, dialysis is likely to be required in advanced stages. Rather than USG, MRI etc. I would prefer periodically monitoring blood creatinine levels. That will indicate worsening kidney function even if it occurs after 40 years of age.

So you mean to say chances are high as others in my family also effected and I should go for blood test instead of USG to check the kidney efficiency?
You need not panic.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. No, I did not say that. I said that the genes are there in your family. Whether you have that is a matter of chance. You either have it or you don't. There is no middle path. You need not really get a genetic test done as even if you have the gene there is hardly anything that you can do. Rather, periodic monitoring of renal function (blood creatinine once in perhaps a year). It is only following any anticipated worsening of function that you should go for an USG (which would help in confirming). For all practical probability, if you had inherited the gene, the expression would have occurred by now and earlier the expression, worse is the outcome.
