What Is The Life Expectancy Of Someone With 25% Heart Function?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 May 2017
Question: Just moved from Williamsburg VA to XXXXXXX Ranch, FL. I am in heart failure, 25% EF a few months ago. I've been taking Carvedilol, Losartan, and Lipitor as ordered by my cardiologist. Lately I have been doing a lot of standing in garage to unpack moving boxes. I have not had edema before now. The last few days, my right ankle has swelled a bit and today my lower leg seems to be a bit swollen. Should I get to an emergency room immediately, or can I wait until April 24 when I have an appt with a cardiologist?

Brief Answer:
You can wait safely

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,

After going through the medical query I understand your concern. I'm Dr. Bhanu Partap and I am a Cardiology practitioner.

As you heart function is quite on the lower side 25% (normal is 55 % and above), due to which the venous pooling of the blood on the dependent parts of the body like legs and feet increases due to the effect of gravity on prolonged standing. This usually happens in cardiac failure patients.

Things which you need to take care is to limit your water consumption to less than 1.5 liters as a whole daily and also to reduces dietary salt intake. Don't stand continuously for a long period and while lying down keep a pillow beneath your legs to reduce swelling.

As of now, there is no emergency and you can safely wait till your appointment. Just be regular with the prescribed meds.

I hope this information will be helpful. If you have any more doubts, please feel free to ask me back.

I wish you good health

Kind Regards
Dr. Bhanu Partap
