Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: My relative, A 60 Yr old obese woman was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in Oct. She was not able to complete her chemo due to infection, etc but her white counts were normal at the end of treatment. She has opted for no more treatment and is in a nursing home. Now, 6 mo later her white blood cell number is up to 24000. How long can she possibly live without treatment now that it seems the leukemia is back and will the doctors be able to control her discomfort?

Brief Answer:
Treatment depends on stage and type of ALL.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
She has acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Treatment of choice is chemotherapy.
She has already taken few dosage of chemotherapy and then stopped the treatment.

Now she has leukemia back. Treatment depends on type of ALL, blast percentage and previous treatment regimen. Treatment options are either chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.

It is very difficult to say that how long she can live without treatment. There are many factors affect the prognosis and survival. Her blast percentage, type, stage of all and general health issues affect the prognosis.

Please send me her all reports so that I can help you further. I will wait for your follow up with all reports.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have any doubts then feel free to ask me.

I,m sorry but I do not have access to the specific blast, type and stage info you requested. She is developing bruises all over her body and a certain amount of dementia. She has severe arthritis so the bone pain she is now experiencing may be related to either, I assume. I am looking for a ball park/range as her 90 yr old mother is alive and I need to break the news and prepare her as best I can. Please give me something to help with this horrible task

Brief Answer:
Her bruise may be due to low platelet count.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Her bruise may be due to low platelet count. Her bone pain may be due to arthritis or leukemia. But without any report it is very difficult to say about treatment or prognosis.

In general at this age with acute lymphoblastic leukemia prognosis remains poor despite of any treatment.

If possible send me reports for further guidance.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
