What Is The Normal PSA Level?
PSA levels up to 5 ng/mL are considered normal for your age
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
A normal PSA level is less than:
3 ng/ml for men aged 50-59
4 ng/ml for men aged 60-69
5 ng/ml for men aged 70 and over.
As your PSA is 2.31 ng/ mL it is not a concern.
As levels increase above 10.0 ng/mL, the probability of cancer increases dramatically and that becomes a concern.
In people who have a borderline PSA (above 4 ng/ mL) the PSA velocity and free PSA are measured. A PSA doubling time of less than 18 months might increase the probablity of cancer. Another variable which increases the possibility of prostate cancer is the amount of free PSA.
There is also another variable when evaluating PSA levels. PSA exixts in bound and free forms. In medical literature, if more than 25 percent of the total PSA is free, there is less chance of having prostate cancer.
It is important to know if you have a benign enlargement on prostate and that is causing urinary symptoms. If you have benign enlargement of prostate then it is a completely harmless condition but requires to be seen by the urologist should it cause urinary retention and increased frequency.
Infection of prostate and benign enlargement of prostate might also cause raised PSA levels in some men occasionally.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
