What Is The Recommended Dosage Of Pedialyte For An Elderly Man With A History Of Diarrhea?
2 to 3 glass after every episode but u can take much more. than this
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
For an adult, the ideal condition is that we should take that much as to keep our body well hydrated this can be assessed by having normal urine like 3 to 4 times daily which is clear...
But this may be difficult to assess, a rough estimate is to have 2 to 3 glass (i.e. about 500 ml) of it after every loose stool to prevent dehydration.
We should continue taking it until there are loose motions. At least 3 litter a day would be needed for a normal adult to be well hydrated however this amount may well be very high if we are losing fluid more with severe diarrhea. So 2 to 3 glasses after every episode diarrhea or vomiting is the least needed.
The important point is that we should not worry to take more .no problem if taken more then needed as the extra fluid would not be absorbed from the gut and the body can excrete it but if we take less then needed this can be hazardous .so try to take more and more fluids but not less then the amount mentioned above.
We generally encourage people to take as much as they can. It's not only Pedialyte, you can also take other fluids as well.
If any time you feel you are unwell or u are severe dehydration (like feeling dizzy, fainting etc) then you must see your doctor as you may need intravenous fluid.
Hopes this answers your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. Please don't hesitate to ask anything.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Rahman
BTW, I had lower back surgery 3 years ago but continue to have hurting when I stand too long or walk too far. My back seems to be better since taking the Pedialyte. Am I crazy or could this be helping me with my lower back situation?
Pedialyte is not a treatment of diarrhea it' only avoids dehydration
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
To be honest Pedialyte is not a treatment for diarrhea , neither it would prevent any diarrhea .it's simply a properly formulated fluid to replace water of our body that can be lost .It does not treat diarrhea neither it is used to avoid or prevent diarrhea. Treatment and causes of diarrhea is separate. However we use Pedialyte when we have loos motions to replace the lost fluid and not to cure the diarrhea. So Pedialyte is not recommend for prevention of diarrhea
So if you don't have loose stools, vomiting or dehydration, you don't need Pedialyte strictly.
Regarding the improvement of your backache, (pleased to hear this) well rehydration may improve your general well being but it does not have any things to do with your back ache directly .
If your diarrhea dos not settle completely you can talk to your doctor for its proper treatment.
Hope I have answered your question. Please fell free to ask any thing else you need to know.
Best luck
