Question: What is the risk of kidney damage from cardiac catheterization?
I've had a recent nuclear stress test that had abnormal results. My cardiologist and I are considering cardiac catheterization. I've had previous procedures and had stents implanted, most recently three years ago. Overall I feel well with no symptoms. My blood is check regularly and creatine levels are in the high end of normal.

Brief Answer:
You have really low chances to develop kidney problems after coronaro angio

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your concern and would explain that it is really less likely that you will develop kidney problems related to the XXXXXXX during coronary angiogram, considering the fact that you don't suffer from chronic renal disease and you have already had a coronary angiogram earlier.

You should know that there is a risk of 1-3% for patients to have ' contrast induced nephropathy' during a coronary angiogram and this is much more likely to occur in chronic kidney patients.

To conclude, I think you have really low chances to develop this complication and I would encourage you to perform the test if it is recommended by your cardiologist.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

Thanks for the reply. I found the information very helpful but have a follow up question. Is contrast induced nephropathy commonly a temporary condition or is it likely to be permanent?

Brief Answer:
My opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

The changes in kidney function are usually temporary, in patients who develop contrast induced neuropathy, but in up to 6 % of patients with no underlying chronic renal disease, the kidney dysfunction may persist or even worsen.

Anyway, considering the percentage of 1-3% of persons otherwise healthy who are at risk for kidney complications due to contrast, the calculated overall risk for persistent kidney disease is too low, considering also the benefits of coronary angiogram and the risk of a hypothetical heart attack if not diagnosed properly.

Hope you will find this information helpful!

Wishing all the best,

Dr.Iliri
