default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: One am my upper chest was sore to the touch, below neck, center area about as big as a hand. Not as tender now, area now looks bruised and about 2 inch diameter, a bit puffy. I first thought spider bite. Right in center of chest, two inches down from "hollow" below neck. Started about 4 days ago. It is sore to the touch.

Brief Answer:
costochondritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question
It sounds like you may have costochondritis. That is an inflammation of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the sternum. It causes your chest wall to be tender to touch. It usually does not cause bruising, though so perhaps you did get a bite or sting. Ice should be okay but also taking an antiinflammatory medication like ibuprofen may be helpful to you. If it does not clear up or if the pain gets severe please see your doctor for an exam.
Best wishes to you,
Dr. Robinson
