What Is The Survival Rate For People With Small Cell Lung Cancer?
Question: This is regarding my father. he is 67. weight 55.9 kg.Recently he has been detected as Cancer patient. As I know it is life-threatening, please let me know if the performance stage is 1 or 2 what is chances of survival? Though the all tests are done, reports are awaiting. Hence doctor has not started any medicine yet. please suggest what would I do next?
Brief Answer:
depending on the stage
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
It is true that small cell lung cancer is a serious disease. The patient has a good performance status which gives a good prognosis.
Apparently the disease seems limited stage, confined to the chest. PET scan will give the final stage and it will decide the treatment. If limited stage then chemo and radiation. If extensive stage then only chemo.
In limited stage 2-3 year survival possible. But extensive average is 1 year.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.
To draw the reference to your reply ".....It is true that small cell lung cancer is a serious disease....".
My father has been detected with non small cell carcinoma not the small cell...does it change anything as per as time frame for survival concerned?

Brief Answer:
not much
Detailed Answer:
Sorry I overlooked the non- part. But still, in this stage with mediastinal nodes surgery is not possible and what I said about the treatment is similar. Only the chemo regime is different. Survival not much different also. But if it has egfr mutation ( tested on biopsy sample) then it may be more by another 1-2 years.
