In some countries, these vaccines are included in regular immunisation schedule whereas in others it is an optional one. Depending on where you live, there are 3 dose and 4 dose variants of the regime. In the US, the 4-dose series is given at 2, 4, 6 & 12–14 months of age whereas in the UK, the 3-dose regime is given at 2, 4 and 13 months of age. This vaccine protects against a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae which may cause meningitis. However, another bacteria, Hemophilus influenzae B (HiB) may cause meningitis and this too can be prevented by vaccination. It too can be given as 3 or 4 dose regime. It is administered at 2, 4, 6 & 12–15 months of age with the 6th month dose being the optional one.
Tubercolsis vaccination means BCG. It is administered in select countries with high incidence of tuberculosis or for children with parents or grandparents born in countries with high incidence of tuberculosis. It is administered as a single dose at birth but may be given later if not administered earlier.
In End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) the kidney cannot oxidise Vitamin D which is a process essential for the activation of this Vitamin. Hence mere administration of Vitamin D is not enough. Rather, activated Vitamin D or Calcitriol needs to be given.
