Blood in the semen is called hematospermia and there are different possible causes.
Though it is very alarming to see, in the majority of persons, it is not due to a serious cause and in some cases, the cause is not found and it resolves on its own.
Some of the causes include-(1) conditions of the prostate such as infection, benign (not cancerous) enlargement, cancer of the prostate, previous biopsy of the prostate
(2)infection/inflammation, cysts, benign polpys of the urethra- the urethra is the tube inside of the penis
(3)cysts of the seminal vesicles- the seminal vesicles are glands that are involved in helping producing semen
(4)hypertension, liver disease, bleeding disorders can also cause this problem
To find the exact cause, you would need to be seen by your doctor for assessment. This would include the full history, examination and investigations.
Investigations would include urine analysis and culture (sent to the lab to look for infection). PSA , if not done recently, should be done. An ultrasound, specifically a transrectal ultrasound, would be helpful as well.
