What Kind Of Tools To Avoid Using When One Is Pacemaker Dependent?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Mar 2016
Question: My husband had a permanent pacemaker put in July 5, 2015. He then had a total ablation, "killing the information bank from the upper chambers, so that his life is totally pace-maker dependent." He is now well enough to start some light remodeling projects. What are the types of construction equipment/tools, ie drills, electric saws, etc, he needs to be especially careful around? XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
Heavy vibrating power tools, other tools, keep a distance away from ICD

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM: Please note that there are many theories out there of what to do, I can tell you that many people continue to use power tools, what is important is that you do not place the power tools especially the rotating motor near your ICD that I assume is on the left side of his chest. Also, please note that if he is right handed then that is even better for him. What happens is that the electromagnetic field produced by the tools can temporarily shut off the ICD or even permanently for that matter, therefore it is safer to avoid heavy vibrating tools like XXXXXXX hammers, power chain saws, this is also a discussion to have with his cardiologist at his next appointment. I hope this helps and good luck
