What Makes Child Dig Her Ears Often?
Question: Should I be concerned when my daughter digs her finger inside her ear (both ears) and holds her throat every now and then?
She is up to date on her vaccines and flu shot. She had a high fever of 103.9 from Dec. 22nd-26th. Her doctor said she contracted a virus and that it could be the influenza. At the time of her doctor visit Dec. 24th both ears were free of fluid, clear lungs but her throat was slightly red.
She is eating and playing again. However, she is still very irritable. I have noticed her hands and feet are unusally cold. Her voice does sound a little rasp.

Brief Answer:
Check ears again.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description I would suggest that you should get her ears reexamined.
Usually ear infections manifest a few days after start of fever.
If she is digging her ears with a raspy voice it is likely that her eardrums could be swollen.
Consult your doctor again and get her throat and ears checked.
Usually these are viral and will settle in a few days.
If fever recurs then a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin may be needed to treat secondary bacterial infection.
Wishing your child good health.

Dr Arun

This is a continuation from my most resent question about my daughter. She is 15 months. I am sick with an upper respiratory infection (my throat is soar and swollen I can't talk) I wear a mask and wash my hands constantly. I am so afraid that I will pass my illness on to her. I am a nursing mom as well.
