What May Cause Sudden Swelling And Pain In The Big Toe?

Question: Doctor, My mother who is 64 years old suddenly complained pain in her big toe and she has swelling as well. We are overseas at the moment. she did not injure herself and there are no bruises either. I have giver her over the counter available voltaren (12.5mg), which after 1 hour reduced the pain. what can I give her? what would be the cause?

Hello,

This is seems to be gouty arthritis. Go for serum uric acid test, till then you can give her Tramadol and paracetamol combination twice daily, along with Deflazacort twice daily and Tab Febuxostat once daily. She can also do hot water fomentation.
