What Might Be The Cause Of Headache, Pain In Neck Area, Sore Throat, Nausea, Vomiting And Stomach Pain?
I have a friend with following symptoms and I am wondering what might be the cause?
Prior two days sore throat.
This morning 10am headache and pain in neck area. Nausea.
Vomiting noon and then six more times till evening now. Unable to keep down much liquids.
No fever.
Stomach pain and especially acute upon pressing.
She does have a history of elevated blood pressure. Could it be food poisoning or stomach viral or bacterial infection?
Thanks,
Pierre
it could be an infection
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
if it were for the vomiting only I would have thought of food poisoning but the rest of the symptoms are usually related to viral infections. What raises some concerns is the headache and neck pain. Sometimes serious infections like meningitis may start with mild symptoms resembling of a common respiratory tract infection (sore throat, etc) and only manifest the full-blown clinical picture later. The lack of fever is very much against a serious infection though.
In any case, since she's had a lot of vomiting she'd better be examined by a doctor to assess her condition and suggest appropriate treatment. If there are no signs of serious disease then nausea and vomiting can be treated with either metoclopramide or domperidone (drugs that relieve vomiting).
So in conclusion, her symptoms are most likely caused by a viral infection. No definite diagnosis can be made from afar though and you'd better take her to a doctor for proper assessment.
I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
