What Must I Do About Abdominal Cramps, Pink Mucus Discharge Followed By Dark Blood Clots Discharge?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Sep 2022
Question: Out of the blue I woke up in the night with cramping and spent the next hour on the toilet, ending with diaharea. No blood at that time. The next morning, no blood, the next thing I felt an ozzing feeling, checked and is was a mucousey pinkish red blood, so much I had to change my clothes. The next time I notice several dark red jello type clots and the next time just one dark red clot. Since then (4 days) I've had no bleeding and no blood in stools. I went to my doctor, my white blood cell count was only slightly elevatated. What was that?, and can I prevent future episodes?

Brief Answer:
It sounds perfectly benign

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Although distressing, what you describe sounds completely benign. Usually, fresh blood (including clots) is indicative of a lower gastrointestinal bleeding, e.g. hemorrhoids, diverticula or angiodysplasia. The cramping you describe could also indicate infectious colitis. Cancer should however always be excluded. Provided that you have not undergone a full colonoscopy in the last 10 years, this would in my opinion be the next step.

In the acute phase, the most important thing is to look for signs of anemia and low blood volume, e.g. low urine production, dizziness, fatigue, pallor, chest pain. If you take anticoagulant medication, you should not take them as long as you bleed. The bleeding will usually stop on its own, but keep hydrated using water, lemonade, juice, etc.

Hope this is helpful.
