default
Posted on Tue, 17 Oct 2023
Question: cannot fully extend tip of thumb. I fell on wrist April 15,hyperextending it. I treated as a sprain and it seemed to heal to almost normal within 6 weeks. Inflamation returned in August and cotinued to get worse. After a few weeks of increased inflamation I notice inability of thumb to fully extend. Can this condition be treated, or is surgery for reptured tendon eminent?

Brief Answer:
Probably pinched nerve of the wrist, follow the advice below

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to a pinched nerve in the wrist. It can be related to injury during the fall. To confirm the diagnosis these examinations should be done:
- Nerve conduction study
- Magnetic resonance to see detailed views of your body

Some advice that I can give to you are:
- Use anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day
- Another treatment consists in prescribed corticosteroids. You should consult your doctor about this treatment
- If the symptoms continue for a few months surgery may be considered to take pressure of the nerve.

You should consult a neurologist for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
