
What Should Be The Haemoglobin Level In The Blood Before A Blood Transfusion?

Question: how low does your blood level need to go before you need a blood transfusion? I am a male 74 years old.

I've seen people as low as a hemoglobin of 3. The normal should be above at least 13.5. Complications generally start around 7 so we recommend everyone who is anemic get transfused once levels get to 7. That is of course if you are a health person without medical problems. If there is underlying heart disease, then we transfuse earlier.
