What Type Of Biopsy Should Be Done For Mass On Kidney?
Question: Hello,
I had an ultrasound done on my kidneys because a CT scan showed some cysts on both kidneys. When the ultrasound came back it shows that I have a mass on my left kidney and 2 masses on my right kidney. I had an ultrasound done last February, 2 - 3 months ago that did not show any cysts. They want to do a biopsy through a Urologist's office and I am wondering what type of biopsy I should have, if I need one.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
hi and welcome
Detailed Answer:
First,ct is much more specific than ultrasound and if ct showed no sign of malignancy then this is probably true. Ultrasound may show some specific masses and if there is any doubt about malignancy then biopsy should be done. It is always recoomended to do less agreesive biopsy so target percutaneous biopsy should be done first. If appropriate specimen cant be taken then open biopsy should be considered. Wish you good health. Feel free to ask

Dr.Romic,
Thank you for your quick response, I forgot to mention to you that I was not able to take the "Contrast" XXXXXXX for CT scan because my reading was "31" and the limit was "30". My Oncologist opted to have me just drink the Barium substance without the XXXXXXX Would that have made a big difference in what they saw on the scan? What is the "percutaneous" biopsy about? I am not familiar with that term.
Thank you.

hi
Detailed Answer:
Well, contrast can increase sensitivity of test but in kidneys imaging it has less importance then in other abdominal imaging. So I dont think that ct could misdiagnose anything and results should be reliable.
Percutaneous biopsy means that biopsy is done with special needle which is inserted through skin into suspicious kidney mass. it is usually done under the control of ultrasound or ct scan and it can be done under local anasthesia.
If this wouldnt be succesful then you need open surgical procedure.
