What Would My Toddler's Fecalysis Result Indicate After Frequent Diarrhea For 3 Days?
Hello. My 17 month old son has had diarrhea going on 3 days now. The 1st day he had 8 episodes. The 2nd day 5 episode and the consistency is improving. No fever, and still active. A little cranky.
Lab results:
Color: yellow
Consistency: watery
Ova/parasite: no ova or parasite seen
RBC: 0-2/hpf
Pus cells: 0-2/hpf
Bacteria: many
Yeast cells: few
Fat globules: few
I hope you can help me. Thank you.
It can be toxin induced
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Based on the history you have shared, it can be toxin induced diarrhea due to contamination of food or fluids intake and may have resolved once toxins have been cleared out of the system.
Improvement in his symptoms suggest that no gross measures needed like antibiotics etc as stools analysis hasn't yielded any parasite or bacteria signs. This much yeast cells can be food related like due to milk products and if symptoms resolve may not be needed to be worked up anymore.
Meanwhile salts and water deficiencies should be kept in check and oral rehydration salts can be used. If symptoms persist antibiotics like ciprofloxacin may be needed but should be used in children with caution and unless needed unavoidably.
Metronidazole may not work in this diarrhea as evidence of bacterial or ameobic diarrhea is scanty. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Hope this has answered your query. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Regards aww
