When Should Belara Birth Control Pills Be Continued After Missed Doses?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Dr S Patra,

We had a discussion a couple of days ago, where I missed some birth control pills and took an emergency pill (I copy our discussion below). You suggested to wait for the period to start.

So I waited anxiously, and the period started on XXXXXXX 30th. On XXXXXXX 30 the bleeding was very slight, on XXXXXXX 31 it looked pretty much as usual, while on Feb 1 it was slighter again.

I would be very grateful if you could advice me what to do next:
1) On which day should I start taking Belara birth control pills again? I took the last pill on XXXXXXX 25th (Monday) and then I took an emergency pill on XXXXXXX 26th (Tuesday). Or should I wait and give my body a break for at least some time? I am not going to involve into sex for at least two-three weeks. And I can retain from sex as much as needed, this is not a problem. Health is more important to me, and I would like to learn taking pills correctly and have normal periods again.
2) Should I repeat a blood test once again?

Many thanks for your advice.

I COPY OUR PREVIOUS DISCUSSION BELOW:

Dear Doctor,

I missed some birth control pills. My last period started on Dec 23rd. On Dec 29th (after 7 days break) I started a new pack and for 7 days in a row I had pills until Dec 5th. I had sex on some of these days between Dec 30-Jan 4 while taking pills.

However, then I missed 7 pills on days Jan5th-11th (it's hard to explain why...). There was no bleeding during this pill-free time and I had no sex.

I started taking pills again from XXXXXXX 12th till 25th until I finished the pack. I had no sex on pill-free days and the days when I continued taking pills. I had sex on my last days 23-25th (I had my last pill on 25th). But I was really worried afterwards if protection worked so I took an emergency pill (Escapelle) on the evening 26th.

I know I mixed everything and that it is very bad. What can be the consequences? Was protection enough? What will happen to my period now? I still have no period.

I did a HCG blood test yesterday (on 27th) and it was negative.

Thank you very much.

Looking forward to your response.

Doctor's reply to your question above...
Brief Answer:
Minimal chance of pregnancy. Repeat the test after 1 week.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Improper use of birth control pill may lead to unwanted pregnancy. However, you DIDN'T involve in sex on the 2nd week (pill free days) and took 3rd week pills completely. Here, chance of pregnancy is very MINIMAL.

2) You took emergency pill on 26th and it will hamper your regular period due to hormonal imbalance. Your period may be delayed for 1-2 weeks.

3) You have gotten NEGATIVE blood test recently. I suggest you to repeat the test after 1 week if you don't get your period in this time.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take pill regularly in correct way.

Regards,
Dr S Patra

Thank you so much for such a detailed and professional reply.

Just a quick question to follow-up: yesterday (on 28th) I had some tiny secretion with a red spot in it - I'd say something similar to what I notice during ovulation, just it was hundred times smaller than usual. Does this indicate something? The period did not start yet.

It indicates that you may get withdrawal bleeding soon.

Brief Answer:
Start new pack pill from D5 of cycle.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

1) You can start taking NEW pack pill from D5 of your cycle and continue for next 21 days with 7 days gap after that. It will be more helpful to regularize your period. You should take pill regularly on scheduled time. Don't forget or miss a pill.

2) As you have got your period, then chance of pregnancy is extremely LOW or RARE. However, you can undergo one blood test for beta-hCG to clear doubt.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and maintain genital hygiene properly.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
