Question: Hello Doctor,

I want to know if restless legs syndrome has been ascertained to being caused due to dopamine imbalance in the brain, is there anyway to get the neurotransmitter normalized? I am not talking about those dopamine agonist meds. as those are just temporary solution, more interested in whether this imbalance can be cured permanently via any other medication or any alternative method?

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for the direct question to me.

I have read your question.

The cause(s)of the restless legs syndrome remain still unknown, but, the imbalance of the neurotransmitter dopamine is thought to cause the symptoms.

There are a number of risk factors that may lead to restless legs syndrome too, such as peripheral neuropathy, iron deficiency, kidney failure, spinal anesthesia, etc.

Treatment consists of investigating and treating if any risk factors, and use of medications such as dopamine agonists, calcium channel blockers, opioids, etc.

There is no known way to restore this dopamine imbalance till now, following an healthy lifestyle and diet, exercise, etc. may help.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for the follow up question.

Finger twitching is not a common symptom of low dopamine levels.

This symptom is more common in cases of neuropathy, electrolytes imbalance, etc.

Discuss with your Neurologist these issues.

Hope this helps.
