White Spots On Left Tonsil . Present Since Late Spring

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Jan 2021
Question: White spots on left tonsil. Present since late spring (could be before but didn't notice). Not painful. Started with one, I think it got a bit smaller. Saw ENT told me nothing to worry about could be from a previous viral infection. I had a flu shot December 2019 and got sick with flu (or Covid-19) last week of January, had pneumonia. that's the only viral infection I had. Took antibiotics. Seeing ENT again this week follow up but noticed there are 3 white spots now. I was treated for H-Pylori in October and took clarythromycin and metronadozole, infection now clear. I have pictures I'd like to show but don't know how to add photo

the first picture was taken a couple of months ago, saw ENT but the other spots developped since then. I have no sore throat, fatigue or fever.

Brief Answer:
Tonsilloliths

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query.

I have examined the images thoroughly and I’m of the opinion that it’s tonsilloliths (tonsil stones) over the left tonsil.

Tonsilloliths are totally harmless and are formed due to the accumulation of food material in the crypts of the tonsils. There is absolutely no infection of the tonsils. I would not suggest you to take any antibiotics for the same.

You need to drink frequent sips of warm water and gargle with warm water, every time after having the meals. With the above measures, you should feel better.

Hope this answers your query; I would be available for the follow up queries.

I see one maybe in the crypt but the other ones won't move at all when pressing. There is no pain or discomfort. If they are not stones, what else could it be?

Brief Answer:
Embedded tonsillolith

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

There are multiple crypts over the tonsils and many a times, the tonsillolith gets embedded in the crypt of the tonsils followed by formation of a mucosal layer over it, hence it would not be peeled off easily.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Wish you good health.

would they not move when I press down or around them? I have pressed on all of them, firmly enough and nothing moves or changes. I value your expertise and hope that's all it is but, for differential diagnosis, could it be something else?
thanks again

Brief Answer:
It’s a spot on diagnosis of tonsilloliths

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome back

I would stick on to my earlier response as it’s a spot on diagnosis of tonsilloliths. There are no other features of tonsillar infection.

Wish you a good health
