Brief Answer:
Can be due to hormonal disturbance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The disturbance in the periods that you are having can be due to hormonal disturbance or excessive exercise or stress. Now that the bleeding has stopped there is nothing to worry. In case such bleeding is recurrent then you need to consult your gynaecologist for proper hormonal treatment to get regular periods. Few investigations like hormonal tests and ultrasound scan will help in detecting the cause of such disturbance.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
