Brief Answer:
Possibly an electrolyte deficiency or dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor.

Muscle twitches like this can have many different causes, but often they are due to dehydration or electrolyte deficiencies, such as low potassium, calcium, or magnesium. As an athlete this may have happened from sweating a lot, and not sufficiently replenishing yourself with enough water or electrolytes. I would first make sure you are well hydrated, along with something to correct any deficiency such as with Gatorade or a multi-vitamin.

If you are still noticing this problem, I would suggest getting your blood checked to make sure your electrolytes are normal. If so, you may need further muscle or nerve testing to see if this problem could be caused by one of these.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
